Science Vocabulary for the Unit

Below is a list of voacbulary will will be discussing in Science.  This is a great thing to talk about and go over at home!

Weather is the condition of the atmosphere in a certain place at a certain time.

Wind is moving air caused by the uneven heating of the Earth’s surface.
A front is the place where one air mass meets and pushes aside another air mass.

Air pressure is the weight of air pushing on everything around it.
The water cycle is the change of water from one state to another as it moves between Earth’s surface and the atmosphere.

Evaporation – process of liquid turning into a gas
PrecipitationWater that falls to the Earth’s surface as rain, snow, sleet or hail.

Accumulation - The collection of water, such as a stream, puddle or lake.
Condensation - To change from a gas to a liquid as the temperature decreases.

Ground water is water that collects underground in cracks and spaces in rocks.
Run off is water that is not absorbed into the ground, instead flows into streams or other collection areas.

A note from President Ella

Don't forget that this Friday (tomorrow) is the last day of the book fair.  Make sure to het cool books and be prepared for our field trip too!  Try to walk in with a smile tomorrow and wear you class shirt.  Try to get compliments and be the best you can be.

Election 2012 update!

Smith Elementary is holding a school wide mock presidential election. We are using the process of the Electoral College to get our votes. Grades K-3 got to draw one state to represent and grades 4-5 got to draw 2 states to represent. We had our class President Ella and class Vice President Brennah draw for us. Follow that blog!

Look to the right and you will notice where you can follow my blog.  It is a easy way to make sure you are notified anytime I update the blog!  Also, notice the survery to the right.  Please vote, I hope math or science wins!!

Study Trip!

Our Storytelling Festival study trip will be this Friday, October 19th.  We will be leaving school no later than 11:30 and returning at 2:00. If you would like to send your child with a sack lunch, that would be great! If not, they will be able to buy lunch in the cafeteria.   We will be eating in our room at about 10:45 or a little later.  Please have your child  wear their class shirts, appropriate shorts/jeans, and comfortable shoes.  The festival is at the Dr. Pepper Stars Center.  It can get a little chilly in there, so you may want to send your child with a light jacket.
Thanks so much and please let me know if you have any questions!

Science: The Water Cycle

This week in Science we are begining our study of The Water Cycle.  Follow the link below to see an interactive diagram of The Water Cycle:

Here are some good videos to watch on The Water Cycle:

Here is the one we wacthed in class:

We also learned The Water Cycle Song:

Water travels in a cycle, yes it does, yee-haw

Water travels in a cycle, yes it does, yee-haw

It goes up as evaporation, forms cloud as condersation and falls down as precipitaion yes it does, yee-haw

Have your child sing it to you tonight. :)  Here is one of my classes singing it today. :)

Here are a few pictures of my scientists working hard in science today!

Division Rocks!

We started division today!  We started with the basics today, and willl move to long divion with the partial quotient method, or as we will call it, the big 7.   Above is a model of division that a group of students created.  Follow the link below to view a video we watched:

If you are an overachiever, you can watch the video below on the partial qoutients and be ahead of the game!
